Kathrin Schmidt
Kathrin Schmidt was the winner of the 2022 ENCATC Research Award for her doctoral research, “Performing Salone: The impact of local and global flows on the aesthetics and ecology of contemporary Krio theatre in Sierra Leone”, undertaken at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Kathrin Schmidt is an experienced cultural and creative industries consultant, researcher and project manager, with a particular focus on cultural cooperation and culture and development programmes, cultural policy and strategies, programme design, sector development, evaluations, as well as in-depth mapping and impact studies. She is based in Nairobi, Kenya, and her work in recent years has focused mainly on Sub-Saharan Africa.
Her research examines the relationships between cultural production, policy, governance, globalisation and development. In 2024/25, she published Globalisation, Commodification and Cultural Production in Africa: Contemporary Theatre in Sierra Leone, extending her doctoral research into a broader analysis of cultural production and the creative economy in Africa.
