João Oswaldo Leiva Filho
João Leiva Filho was chosen as the 2024 ENCATC Research Award Winner for his Doctoral Thesis "Fifty Years Measuring Cultural Engagement: Contributions", Gaps and the Future of Survey, defended at Goldsmiths, University of London.
João Leiva Filho is a Brazilian researcher, cultural entrepreneur and former journalist specialising in cultural participation, audience research and the creative economy. He holds a degree in Economics and a Master’s degree in Cinema from the University of São Paulo, as well as a Master’s in Cultural Management from the Open University of Catalonia. He completed his PhD at Goldsmiths’ Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship in 2024.
He has worked for major Brazilian newspapers including Folha de S.Paulo and Valor, and in communications for the São Paulo Secretariat of Culture. He subsequently founded JLeiva Cultura & Esporte, a consultancy conducting research on Brazil’s cultural sector. His work includes studies of theatre, independent music, animation and cultural participation across Brazilian cities. His doctoral research is being published as Measuring Cultural Engagement, forthcoming from Routledge in 2027.
