Sophie Vanhoonacker is Jean Monnet professor and has a chair in Administrative Governance. Since January 2016, she is dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Maastricht University.

She primarily teaches  courses on EU foreign policy and external relations. In her research she examines the role and influence of bureaucratic actors in multi-layered, polycentric systems of decision-making with a special focus on European foreign policy. She is co-editor of the European Administrative Governance book series at Palgrave Macmillan and board member of the interdisciplinary Centre for European Research in Maastricht (CERIM). She is currently involved in a Horizon 2020 project on Preventing and Responding to Conflict: Developing EU Civilian Capabilities for a Sustainable Peace (EU-CIVCAP) (2015-2018).
