Debate: “Opportunities of crisis”
“Opportunities of crisis: Managing the impact of the financial crisis in Europe, designing innovative strategies and forecasting possible futures”

What are the consequences of the financial crisis on the cultural sector? Which strategies do cultural organisations forecast to survive when European and national subsidies are being cut? And which competences are necessary for future culture managers acting in this new changing environment?
Following the tradition of engaging each year in a major policy debate, ENCATC, in close partnership with the Universiteit Antwerpen/Antwerp Management School, Master Cultuurmanagement organised this year in Brussels on the 7th of July 2011 the European debate “Opportunities of crisis: Managing the impact of the financial crisis in Europe, designing innovative strategies and forecasting possible futures”. This event took place in the framework of the 11th International Conference on Arts and Cultural Management, AIMAC2011, organised in Antwerp, Belgium, 3-6 July 2011.
The keynote speech was delivered by Karel De Gucht, European Commissioner for Trade. A round table followed his cadrage on Europe 2020 strategy of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth as a tool for confronting global economic challenges. A number of prominent participants participated in the round table: Jean-Pierre Baeyens, holder of the Marketing Chair, Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management; Jan Briers, President, Federation of Music Festivals in Flanders; General Manager, Flanders Festival Brussels-Ghent; Paul Dujardin, General Manager, Centre for Fine Arts of Brussels; Julek Jurowicz, Managing Director, SMartBe; Anne Krebs, Head of Studies and Research Department, Louvre Museum; Sylvain Pasqua, Administrator, DG Education and Culture, Unit Culture; and Pierre-Jean Benghozi, Head of Research at the CNRS. The round table was animated by Chantal Pattyn, Manager, Klara radio station.
This debate was also made possible thanks to the kind support of the International Center for the city, landscape and architecture / Centre International pour la ville, l’architecture et le paysage (CIVA) and the dedicated commitment towards ENCATC of its director, Christophe Portois.
The debate was followed by a presentation of CIVA and a visit of the exhibition “Brussels, feats of engineering”. The exhibition included models of buildings and structures, samples of materials, structural elements, photographs and films.
